Scores
The MOAI 10'6 surprised us with its complete package and excellent performance on the water. MOAI appeared as a new player in the SUP market back in 2017, and as a partner of the brand, we immediately had the opportunity to test this promising board. With a design bearing the signature of a former top designer from NIKE, the MOAI 10'6 exudes a clean, sporty, and elegant look. Furthermore, the brand's sustainable philosophy, where a portion of every sale goes to the 'Waves for Change' charity, greatly appealed to us. Time to put this board through a thorough test!
First Impression
Unboxing the MOAI 10'6, we were immediately impressed. The presentation is celebratory, and the accessories are of unexpectedly high quality. This is in contrast to many other packages in the same price range. The paddle, double-action pump, leash, and sturdy carrying bag all feel robust and premium. The three fins and a repair kit are also included, making you fully equipped right away. The board itself, with dimensions of 320 cm in length and 80 cm in width, has a thickness of 15 cm. We immediately noticed that at 12 kg, the board is slightly heavier than some competitors. However, these extra kilos are explained by the advanced Double Layer Technology, where an extra layer of PVC provides more stiffness and durability. This means the board also feels more stable on the water.
On the Water
Once on the water, the extra weight and Double Layer Technology prove their worth. The MOAI 10'6 is incredibly stable, even for beginners. The board's stiffness gives a reassuring feeling, as if you're standing on a hardboard. The non-slip mat is comfortable on the feet and provides excellent grip, which contributes to a relaxed posture. Whether you want to go for a leisurely tour, do yoga, or even install a child seat, this board offers the stability you need. We were also very pleased with the option to attach a seat, as 50% of paddlers also use their board for kayaking regularly. This makes the MOAI 10'6 an especially versatile board for recreational use.
Stability and Stiffness
The stability and stiffness of the MOAI 10'6 are its major strengths. The 15 cm thickness combined with Double Layer Technology ensures that this inflatable board feels surprisingly firm and steady, even in slightly rougher conditions. With a maximum pressure of 15 PSI, you can pump the board up rock-hard, which improves performance. This means that even with little experience, you can easily find your balance and glide comfortably across the water. However, with a weight capacity of 130 kg, the board is primarily suitable for one adult. For those who want to paddle with a child or pet, this might be a bit tight. Also, due to its 320 cm length, the board is less agile than shorter models, making it less suitable for quick turns or rougher waters.
Accessories and Package
A major plus of the MOAI 10'6 is the very complete accessories package. You not only get a high-quality board but also everything needed to get on the water immediately. In addition to the previously mentioned paddle, pump, leash, and carrying bag, there is also a beginner's e-book (valued at €19) and a repair kit. The double-action pump inflates the board within 5 to 10 minutes, which is very efficient. The carrying bag is spacious and sturdy, making the board easy to transport and store. This extensive package distinguishes the MOAI 10'6 from many other entry-level models where you often have to buy separate accessories. This makes it a particularly attractive option for those looking for good value for money.
Who is it for
The MOAI 10'6 is ideal for the recreational beginner and slightly advanced paddler. The board is perfect for short distances on flat waters like lakes and ponds. Its stability makes it a great choice for those learning the sport or wanting to take relaxed tours. However, it is less suitable for speed enthusiasts, advanced paddlers seeking rougher waters, or those who want to stand on the board with multiple people (adults). This board is also not designed for racing; specific touring or race boards are better suited for that. If you are new to the sport and looking for a reliable, user-friendly, and complete board at a great price, the MOAI 10'6 is an excellent investment.
Conclusion
Our long-term experience with the MOAI 10'6 confirms our initial positive impressions. This 'new kid on the block' is in no way inferior to established names in the industry, like Aqua Marina. The quality and stiffness of the board are truly excellent for its price range. It's an all-rounder suitable for various activities, from relaxed touring and SUP yoga to kayaking with a separately purchased seat. Although the maximum weight capacity of 130 kg and the slightly higher weight (12 kg) may be drawbacks for some, the advantages far outweigh these minor points. We therefore highly recommend the MOAI 10'6 to (young) adults who want to discover the world of paddling with a reliable, complete, and eco-conscious product. It's a board that will provide you with years of enjoyment on the water.
